We are a B2B SaaS company with annual contracts. We handle about 1000 contracts annually and almost 3xing YoY. Our subscription management operations used to be on Google Sheets - but beyond a point it's just not possible to do that. There are a myriad of deviations that keep happening - split invoices, payment follow-ups, rate changes annually, etc. - managing on Google Sheets just not possible. Plus payment follows ups for 1000+ customers. That's where Chargebee comes into picture - helping us handle our subscription management - from generating invoices to automated follow-ups for payment to creating various reports. It also integrates with our payment tracking platform (QuickBooks) and automatically updates when payment is received. There are some limitations in terms of handling all use cases - but 90% of the operations get handled here.
  • Invoice generation
  • Reporting on collections
  • Integrations with other RevOps systems - Hubspot, Quickbooks, etc.
  • Handling a variety of invoice scenarios
  • Everything comes at an added cost; so clarity on how much will you actually spend is always lacking
  • Setup is quite complex - takes 3-4 months for things to get up and running and then some more
Well-suited:
  • In a B2B set up - Post achieving some scale and having outgrown Google Sheets/ Excels. Won't add much value if you are dealing with fewer than 400-500 invoices a year.
  • We haven't explored their B2C subscription management side - but that is one of the key strengths of the platform.

We use Chargebee to manage hundreds of monthly subscriptions for our business. We chose it to automatically handle rebills, send collection emails, sync with QuickBooks Online, create an online portal for customers to both start subscriptions and update billing info.
  • The initial import of data was not too complicated.
  • They dedicated real people to the onboarding process.
  • [I feel] customer service never actually fixes any problems. They make you gather information they easily could, write up a big report of the problem, and then tell you why it's not working (usually not even correct). [In my experience] they never actually solve a problem. Not to mention, [in my experience] you can never speak with anyone immediately and coms turnaround is usually over 24 hours.
  • So far, I can not get my customers to checkout online, even after hiring professional developers to help.
  • [I believe] QBO sync is a mess.
  • My account is set up to send payment tokens to Authorize.Net, and no matter how much I disable every possible security feature, I still have 100's of declined cards, that work perfectly well.
If you have a dedicated high level API programmer,
and you do not need to sync with accounting software,
and you don't need to have online checkout,
and you don't use Authorize.Net...
maybe they'd be ok?

Chargebee is the core of our billing platform. We use Chargebee to manage all payments, refunds, credits, etc. Essentially, to ensure that every customer is charged the correct amount. Chargebee is a tool that is used widely across our org. The CS team will go to Chargebee to process a refund when necessary. The Billing team will go to Chargebee to manage payment plans. Our engineering team integrated Chargebee into the rest of our system (website, internal tools) to ensure that Chargebee accounts are created/updated appropriately.
  • Reliable: We've had virtually no issues since launch.
  • Care about customers: Chargebee's account managers/support team have always been very helpful/responsive.
  • Feature-rich: Chargebee has a ton of features that help us do what we want and they are consistently adding new features every quarter.
  • UI can be a little confusing. Overall, a solid though and way better than Zuora.
  • Integration took a long time. Again, think this is a problem across all their competitors as well
Chargebee is really well suited to any growing company. There is probably a lighter-weight solution that might be optimized for a 5 person startup. There may be better options if you're the size of Google. But if you're a venture-backed startup, growing anywhere from Series B to Series E it's great. The tool is purpose-built for SaaS billing, but it now has a ton of features that make non-SaaS billing easy as well.

Chargebee has been our SaaS billing platform from inception. The rich feature set has really provided the framework for us to grow all areas of our business. Our subscription model does have many complexities -- with recurring and non-recurring items. We have found that Chargebee has met the need at every turn.
  • Support for recurring and non-recurring items
  • Strong dashboards and visualizations to model and predict sales performance
  • Good technical support
  • Strong product road map -- new features are added on a consistent basis
  • Given that we have both a self-service and direct sales model, it would be fantastic if we could directly customize the invoices a little more to make sure our terms reflect our contracts
  • We should be able to see the total price before we invoice or add to unbilled charges in the case that we are manually setting up an account
Chargebee is a fantastic solution that really meets the needs of any online business from Saas to e-commerce. I have had experience with many platforms both as a leader and as a consultant, and Chargebee is the platform I have liked the most. I think it also balances feature set with usability -- many platforms like Zuora overcomplicate matters at times or can be too rigid when it comes to certain business use cases.

We use it to perform all monthly and one-time billing of clients and securely manage all our customer accounts. It's used by billing department primarily but does have applications in other areas. It's a game changer in terms of hassle-free recurring billing. I've literally used every single other option and this is hands down the best one.
  • Recurring billing
  • Managing billing details and subscriptions
  • Automating sign up and management for customers
  • Simplifying account setup process for customers
  • Their backend is great, but still being improved a lot (which is great), but sometimes it can be at the cost of consistent workflows because of changing setting layouts.
  • They no longer formally offer their landing pages feature and only offer embedded Javascript which is ok for some applications, but unfortunately limits some applications
Great a small to medium business who wants to offer recurring services and needs a way to manage and track customer behavior, and run it through a high quality trusted gateway.

We use Chargebee to manage several hundred monthly subscriptions for our clients. Prior to this, we were using a typical invoicing system. Chargebee has automated hours and hours of AR, collections, and accounting work and provided our clients with an easy to use platform for managing their payment information. It has also automated communications that help keep our clients informed of their upcoming payments, account status, payment method expiration, etc.
  • Automated dunning. On failed payments, Chargebee smartly attempts to collect the payment at a future date.
  • Support: the support staff at Chargebee has been very helpful and taken care of the few headaches we've had, for us.
  • Automated request for payment information updates. This is a small but mighty feature. What used to be a long thread of emails is now a simple one-click automated solution.
  • Pricing: it feels a bit expensive to me, especially now that Stripe has released a similar set of tools for free. They'll have to step up their feature set a bit to stay on top.
  • Interface design. It is fine but feels a little clunky.
If you have a large number of small transactions on a recurring basis (subscriptions), Chargebee is for you. A small agency such as mine that does not have dedicated sales/collections/accounting staff will benefit greatly.

Chargebee is used by multiple teams within our company: Sales, Product and Customer Success. It solves a bunch of problems for us -
  • Ability to set up pricing experiments smoothly
  • Manage subscriptions, overages, upgrades
  • Integration and managing multiple payment gateways
  • Managing multi-currency billing and country taxes
  • Tracking our metrics closely: Churn, revenue, growth and more
  • Ability to manage subscriptions of customers and upgrade them swiftly with one click. Manage overages easily.
  • Integration with tools such as Xero, Intuit Books
  • Ability to manage multi-currency and tax settings across countries
  • The only feature the could use improvement is probably invoicing for past date and future dates
Amazing for B2B SaaS Businesses - especially the ones in the growth or setup stage. Chargebee has a great plan for startups which allows smaller businesses to get set up without investing lot of money. Their startup plan also allows businesses to collect up to 50K USD without any upfront cost.

Chargebee is being used as our subscription management platform. Braintree's functionality for managing subscribers is very limited, which means we would have had to have built our own interface to manage subscriptions between our payment processor (Braintree) and our customer database. This would have tied us up on developing our product, which costs us time and we wouldn't have had as robust of a product in the end as Chargebee already has.
  • Simple interface that new employees are able to navigate fairly easily
  • Provides simple dashboard information you need.
  • Really love the dunning that makes it much easier for us to collect expired credit card info. Otherwise we'd be doing it manually and that would be a huge pain
  • It wasn't allowing us to add a one time purchase without making it an ongoing subscription with only one payment. They may have fixed it very recently but that was a big pain from a reporting perspective (it was including one time purchasers as subscribers)
  • Email automation is not very robust. Difficult to customize triggers by subscription, you have to send the same message to all subscribers for a specific action
  • Wish it had a way to write off and cancel the subscription of customers who haven't updated their cc info. That can be a long painful and very manual process. And if that feature is available somewhere they don't do a good job of making that clear.
It's great for an early stage startup who doesn't have the resources to build in all of the subscription management features they need. It has a great free tier that makes it very accessible to a young startup. It's also great for a growing startup but it may not be the best fit for a more mature startup with the resources and need to build something a bit more custom.
